Picture this, you've been shopping and found the dress of your dreams, then immediately start panicking about spots...
Dealing with spots on your back and shoulders, often called 'bacne', can be frustrating. Many of us struggle with this issue, me included, and often don't realise that our hair care routine might be contributing to the problem. I was told a fabulous tip from my hairdresser that has significantly helped me, and I'm excited to share it with you!
Washing your hair When you wash your hair in the shower, the products used on your hair, especially conditioners, rinse down your back and shoulders. These products often contain oils and ingredients that, while nourishing for your hair, can clog the pores on your skin if left on the skin. Combined with the warm environment of the shower, it creates a perfect breeding ground for bacteria, leading to those pesky breakouts.
The simple switch To combat this, I tried a new approach. Washing my hair over the bath before taking a shower! Seems like a pain but here’s a step-by-step guide on how to do it effectively:
1) Prep your hair: Start by brushing your hair to remove any tangles and "debris". This minimises the amount of dirt and product that can wash out onto your skin.
2) Wash over the bath: Lean over your bath to shampoo and condition your hair. This way, any product and residue will go directly into the bath rather than down your back.
3) Clip and shower: After washing, clip your hair up to keep it off your back and shoulders. This prevents any remaining residue from touching your skin while you shower.
4) Cleanse your back: Lastly, step into the shower and use a body wash with antibacterial ingredients, such as tea tree oil, focusing particularly on your back and shoulders. This helps remove any residue and keeps your skin clear and fresh.
Alternative method If you don’t have a bath or find it difficult to bend, you can still protect your back by modifying your shower routine, which I will do if I have less time too.
Wash your hair as you normally would.
After rinsing your hair, clip it up away from your back.
Use a good antibacterial body wash to thoroughly clean your back, ensuring that all residue from your hair products is washed away.
Since incorporating this simple change into my routine, I’ve noticed a significant improvement in my skin on my back and shoulders. It’s an easy and practical solution that might work wonders for you too!
A couple of extra things that really helped me…
Wearing tight gym gear or staying in sweaty clothes for too long... It might actually be making things worse. Breathable fabrics like cotton can make a big difference, especially if you’re working out or it’s a warm day. Try not to stay in damp clothes for too long, changing and showering soon after has really helped keep my skin calmer and less spotty.
Scrubbing your back like mad hoping it’ll clear up faster? I’ve definitely done this and learned the hard way that it doesn’t help. Gentle exfoliation just a couple of times a week is plenty. I use a soft mitt or cloth with a body wash that has salicylic acid. Anything too harsh can actually irritate the skin more.
Try it out! Why not give this method a try and see if it makes a difference for your skin? Sometimes only a small change can make a big difference. For more tips and tricks, you can join my monthly email list here https://subscribepage.io/skincare
