Your guide to a DIY bouncy blow dry

Do you have a party to go to this year? Is someone you know getting married? Or are you going out for a special occasion? It's not a secret that feeling we look good gives us a spring in our step, and one thing that really helps with our confidence is our hair!

The number of times I'm told by a client, bride or otherwise, "I can't believe that's my hair" makes me smile because I know how much of a difference it makes when we realise something we thought wasn't achievable actually is!

So, as promised in the title of this blog, I'm going to show/tell you in 5 easy tips of how to create a luscious bouncy blow dry look THAT LASTS (key point here) on yourself.

Let's get started...

 1) Use the correct shampoo - Whether you have fine, thick or anywhere in between hair, using a clarifying shampoo when you want a bit of lift is a great start! A clarifying shampoo cleanses your hair and scalp, giving it as much lift as possible as it's not weighed down with any build up of product or residue. Wash your hair once to cling onto the "dirt" and wash again to clear it away. Use little or no conditioner to keep the hair from being too soft.

I recommend and use Redken hair clensing cream shampoo.

2) Use a root boosting/volumising product - this doesn't have to be expensive, but something that's designed to give your hair some oomph and staying power. These often have setting lotions in them, as well as heat protectors which will help the end result in a big way. Spray this 3-5 times through your hair before drying.

Again I use, and recommend Redken One United Multi-Benefit Treatment Spray It has all of these benefits and more in one product! A real must have.

3) Dry your hair correctly - The best way to get initial volume to your hair, is to make sure you're drying it in the best way to give it some extra bounce. Start by flipping all your hair to one side and blasting the roots for about 20 seconds. Use your fingers to gently "fluff up" and lift the roots as you go, so they don't try too close to your scalp, flip it back in the other direction and do the same thing. Keep doing this all round your hair line until it's almost 100% dry. Dry the mid lengths and ends of your hair to about 85% dry, using a similar technique and getting lots of air circulating your hair.

4) Add some tools - The one thing you may need to purchase if you haven't got some already, is some velcro rollers. These are cheap, you can get them in loads of places such as boots or on amazon and they're super easy to use. So start at the front of your head at by your forehead, take a section the same width as the roller, and about 1 inch in depth (front to back) pull the section straight up (important to get that lift), hold the roller right at the end and under the tip, then roll it down until it can't get any tighter/it's touching your head. Repeat this in a mohawk type fashion down the middle of your head. Do the same for each side. When you get to the back, don't worry too much if you get a bit muddled, getting that hair in will still give it the bounce, but focusing on the front and side sections are what you'll see most so the rest will just take some practice - for an extra boost, spray each section lightly with hairspray. You can get bigger rollers for longer hair, and smaller for shorter. Extra tip: - your hair needs to go round a roller at least 3 times to create a wave or curl. the bigger the roller, the less of a curl, so if you want a classic blow dry look rather than curly, go for a larger size roller.

5) Finishing off - Once you've finished going round your whole head, give your hair a low (in speed not heat) blast of heat to warm it up again, then flip it to cool air and go over each roller for about 5 seconds. This will help the hair finish to 100% dry, and keep the set in place. Ideally wait at least an hour, the longer you wait, the longer it'll last. Once the time is up, take out the rollers and give your hair a shake up, separating the sections. You can brush through and add some texture spray and/or hairspray to finish the look!

So there's my 5 tips you can absolutely do yourself and achieve amazing results.

As with anything, it takes a bit of practice so don't choose the day of your event to give it a try. You may have beginners luck, but who want's that stress if you don't!
